Two fires, one hard decision, and why we chose to stay.

We didn’t set out to become experts in insurance policies, construction timelines, or HOA board meetings. We set out to build something our kids could inherit — a place that would still be standing, still bringing in income, still theirs, long after we’re gone. That’s the honest reason Blue Haven Villa exists. Not as an investment property in the abstract, but as a legacy, built with a real chunk of our savings and a lot of hope that it would hold.
The first sign that hope wasn’t guaranteed came a few years into owning the condo. A fire broke out in a different building in our community — not ours, no direct damage to our unit — but it exposed something we hadn’t thought to question: our community was underinsured. HOA fees jumped almost overnight as the true cost of adequate coverage became impossible to ignore. It was a wake-up call we didn’t ask for, but one we’re grateful we got early.
A year later, we weren’t so lucky. Fire hit our own building. This time, it wasn’t a warning — it was a total loss.

We stood in what was left and had a real conversation about walking away. Selling the lot, taking whatever we could recover, and letting someone else deal with what came next. It would have been the easier choice. Nobody would have blamed us for making it.
We didn’t choose that path.
Instead, we rebuilt — down to the studs, from a space that was ash back into the condo guests now book, review, and return to. Every decision along the way, from the flooring to the furniture to, yes, even the coffee bar we’ve written about here, got made with the same question in mind: is this something we’d be proud to hand our kids one day? That question shaped this place more than any design trend did. If you’ve read our post on what we stock the coffee bar with, that’s not just a product list — it’s a small piece of what came back after everything else was gone.

Today, Blue Haven Villa is a 5.0-rated Superhost listing, five+ years running. But the achievement that actually matters to us isn’t the rating — it’s that we kept going. We didn’t rebuild a condo. We rebuilt a decision to still believe in this place, and in what we were trying to leave behind.
This blog is where we share what we’ve learned along the way — the products, the systems, the small details that make a rental actually work. Not because we’re trying to sell you something, but because we spent our own savings and a few hard years learning it, and it seems like a waste not to pass it on.
We’re glad you’re here. Welcome to Blue Haven Villa — rebuilt, and still standing
